“Por las treguas de butrón, no dejes el lorigón”. Weapons, combat wounds and deaths in late medieval Basque Country

The aim of this work is to undertake a first approach to the material manifestations of combat in the Basque Country during the so-called “Lucha de Bandos” (factional wars) of the Late Middle Ages. This implies seeking evidence for wounds, death and the weapons that caused them. The main narrative sources—“Anales Breves de Vizcaya” and the “Libro de las buenas andanças e fortunas”—and archival records have been explored systematically; crossbows have been identified as the most widely used weapon, and injuries to the head and the neck appear to have been especially common. Lethality of wounds and chances of survival have also been estimated.
