Ethnicity and weapons in Hispania: the shields

Current debate about the concept of ethnicity is broached in this article, giving validity to its use just as the Greeks did. The symbology of the weapons, especially of shields, as a defining ethnic emblem of the poleis, the anfictionias or the states is analysed. In many cases these emblems were not real objects but rather ones that were created based on a heroic past or on the sacra of a divinity. Special interpretative interest is given to the Lusitanian shilds that figure on the Roman coins minted in Hispania under Augustus.
