La obra de A. V. B. Norman The Rapier and Small-Sword supone un significativo progreso en el estudio de la espada. Existen diversos motivos que lo confirman: el autor ofrece un completo análisis de la espada ropera y del espadín desde el siglo XV hasta el siglo XIX, y además crea un modelo perfecto de clasificación de esta arma ofensiva. De ahí que su interés trascienda a su objeto de estudio específico y se convierta en una obra fundamental dentro de los análisis de armamento.
