The siege of Numancia: the closing of the Duero

A new reading of Apiano’s texts allows us a reinterpretation of the findings and theories of Schulten. The German professor identified the forts cited by Apiano to close the Duero River in the places of «Molino de Garrejo» and «Vega de Garray», calling them Uferkastell. However, at present is accepted that they are two of the seven forts of Numantia circumvallation. Here it’s proposed that the two forts built by Scipio to close the Duero River are at both banks of the river, one in front of the other, 400 meters downstream from the fort of Molino, where Schulten believed find the remains of the failed Scipio’s purpose of building a bridge, work that in my own opinion, he didn’t even attempt.
